Etymology
What’s common between a monkey, religious group and a hot beverage?
Color
A rebellious religious group in the 1520 was founded against the church. They adopted an Italian ascetic style hoodie which was brown in color called capuchin. Soon the name of the hoodie – capuchin came to be referred to the brownish color they chose too
Merely by visual semblance a brown monkey was found and was named capuchin monkey and when people found a brown beverage named it cappuccino
It’s rather a surprising thing that a simple beverage which was named sheer-ly after its color takes over the world by storm to become a popular favorite at many places
What makes the beverage brown is obviously the addition of milk/cream to black coffee. But this beverage which is simply milk added to coffee was known by different names across Europe - Kapuziner, Viennese and host of other names most of them based on the color of the drink which is distinctive considering the fact that till them coffee was black.

History
Though this is a pretty old concoction photographs of coffee and milk together were found only in the 1930s. Let me mention here that these were nowhere closer to the drink we sip today. Because the espresso machine which yield espresso which is now the standard base for a cappuccino now was not invented by the time a cappuccino was invented.
The 1950s was the time when the espresso machine gained popularity. All of these machines were steam powered as was the source of power then and hence the milk was steamed and hence the cappuccino we know today originated – espresso, milk and milk foam in equal parts
Cappuccino in Italy is primarily a breakfast drink along with a pastry. So a cappuccino ordered post 10AM there used to be a taboo sorts. It’s now much of an all-day drink though.
