What Goes in
Coffee and Milk are the only two ingredients which go into mocha
There is a standardized recipe for a cappuccino which we mentioned above but that’s not set in stone and that needs some equipment to make. Based on availability of materials and equipment take the best route possible towards cappuccino goodness
Coffee Decoction – It better be strong. As a stronger coffee takes more milk which makes the cappuccino richer.
Milk – Pick normal milk or above in fat content.

- South Indian Filter or espresso machine will give you a strong brew.
- A French press will work fine too but be prepared for a watered down version.
- As usual try avoiding instant coffee as that is the lowest in terms of taste most often. But if you must then pick a good quality instant coffee. Take help from our reviews
Milk – Pick normal milk or above in fat content.
- Skimmed milk neither gives a rich feel nor holds froth because of the lack of fat – It does not taste bad but it’s does not taste great too
How is it made?
How is it made is dependent on what you have
Do you have a steam wand and an espresso machine?
Go ahead whip up the steam wand.
I don’t have a steam wand – Now what
I don’t have coffee brew too – All I have is instant coffee
We have already warned you against it and we stick to it
Do you have a steam wand and an espresso machine?
Go ahead whip up the steam wand.
- Brew a good shot of espresso – 30 ml being the ideal shot for which you would need 3-4 table spoons of ground coffee powder. Tamp it and hook it up to the machine and switch on for espresso.
- Steam the milk – Take a deep mug of milk and steam it using the steam wand. Let the tip of the steam wand sink in and swirl it once in a while. Constant stirring is not necessary
- Tap the steamed milk mug – This will compress the milk froth make it creamier
- Pick a large mug – Pour in the espresso shot and top it with frothed milk.
- If you need more froth feel free to scoop it from the milk mug into your cup
I don’t have a steam wand – Now what
- Brew coffee using any convenient method – Moka Pot, SIF, French press
- Take full cream milk in deep glass and whisk it with a whisk or a metal spoon.
- Milk will become fluffy and creamy in a matter of 5 mins. Skimmed milk might take longer time to get fluffy and might stay so.
- Pour the fluffy milk over the coffee decoction for a creamy cappuccino
I don’t have coffee brew too – All I have is instant coffee
We have already warned you against it and we stick to it
- Add 2-3 tablespoons of coffee powder and sugar into a mug (preferably metal) and add a little warm milk
- Take a whisk of metal spoon and beat the mixture till fluffy
- Slowly add milk to taste
How should an ideal cappuccino be?
The ideal cappuccino defined is defined for making in a café. Otherwise the cappuccino is a simple drink with zero complexity and is versatile enough to cater to many palates.
It should not be sweet but bitter sweet. If you add the bitterness of the coffee added to the cup in a balance the amount of milk to be added should ideally stop where the sweetness of it on the other side of the balance rightly equals to the bitterness
When you taste you cappuccino you should feel 3 things on your tongue
1 – Bitterness and a nutty flavor of coffee – The nutty flavor is usually absent when made with instant coffee
2 – A mildly sweet taste from the milk
3 – A creamy smooth feel in the mouth – Not frothy, not bubbly but creamy
