Review - nescafe classic
Deepika Padukone, Karan Johar , Shankar Ehsaan Loy promote the brand. Many north Indians swear by it as the premium coffee. Infact I know friends of mine who think coffee = Nescafe classic i.e. they have no knowledge of the coffee grounds which can be used to make coffee at all and wonder if coffee can be made in any other way at all except for taking a spoon of coffee powder(instant) and mixing it in milk.
The much hyped about coffee from the Nestle stable – The Nescafe Classic
It is an exceptional marketing campaign I should say – the ads, the signature tune. The brand name is synonymous to coffee as in many hotels its just called Nescafe and is priced higher.
So much on the branding and marketing part. Lets put a few facts together
Nescafe classic is made from Robusta beans. I am kind of sure that it was made from Arabica beans till a few years ago. It might be due to the recession , cost cutting or some other reasons unknown that Nescafe classic silently changed from the better tasting Arabica beans to relatively inferior Robusta beans. (as is written on the pack). As we know the Robusta beans are cheaper and less flavorfull though they are stronger. An already less flavorful bean when subject to the process of making instant coffee will loose even more flavor
It is spray dried. Spray drying apparently when compared to its better cousin freeze drying is inferior. It looses all the oils, flavor and taste.
Because of the spray drying process all the aroma and flavor is lost and hence they pump back in some aroma before closing the lid so that when you open you are greeted by the authentic taste of coffee.

“In the NESCAFÉ range, the beautiful aroma of freshly ground coffee is captured during the grinding process, and added back to the coffee just before it is filled into jars. When you pop open a jar of NESCAFÉ, take a moment to savor its scent.”
See our blog on instant coffee making and the process and the types of drying.
We would not say we prefer Nescafe Classic. Yes but we hate the fact that they changed from Arabica to Robusta slyly. And we are kind of anti – instant as you can see
