Slowly environmental concerns poured in and foam cups were looked down upon. Then paper cups began to rise. But paper cups had issues. They handled heat not so good. People started double cupping their coffees.
This was bad as the cost just doubled for the coffee shop. Jay Sorenson in 1991 designed something called the java jacket which was a cardboard jacket onto the paper cup.
Lids became more sophisticated with time. They had slots in the middle to fit your nose and holes to let steam out , stirrer in and a spout which would cool the liquid before it reaches your tongue. Hi fi lids also have uniquely designed spouts which let smell also reach you letting you enjoy your drink better . <Arom-aah>
