Not any more. time to realise that coffee cups are as influential in perceiving the taste of your coffee as any other ingredient probably.
Infact not just coffee but for food in general these two principles apply
- Stronger = bitter = darker = intense . be it chocolate, coffee or anything for that matter. for example deep red tomato sauce is more intense and pure is the perception
- A contrast with close proximity can enhance or reduce the intensity of the color being seen for example gold with silver will look paler than gold with black
This research takes this understanding one notch further.
Consider the three cups below. In which of these do you think coffee would be considered very bitter ?
The blue too accentuates the brown of the coffee creating a contrast
The transparent cup makes the coffee look brownish golden dark and lighter than it is hence coffee from this is perceived to be less bitter , more flavorful and better
