This was fairly the trend till probably 1980's when the kirana revolution started and job started moving back and forth from villages to cities etc. Coffee is a costlier daily affair when compared to tea especially when job are in a dicey state. Fresh ground coffee became a luxury for people and this was accompanied with the kirana revolution. This led to packaged coffee. cothas, Bayars and many other coffee roasters came out with their own packaged versions for kirana stores. These were cheaper coz of mass production but were of lesser quality than fresh roast as they were packed much earlier and distributed. This was better than moving to tea as the drink of choice in the morning for many and hence the shift was pretty rational for many.
